What's the magazine's mission?

In its 1984 debut issue, the magazine outlined an editorial policy that continues to shape its course: "We hope that the magazine will be compelling in its content, striking in its visual impression. We hope it will provide a sense of the intellectual dynamism that characterizes the Duke community." Whether reporting on alumni of unusual accomplishment, on student achievers, or on the frontiers of science research, the magazine presents the campus not as an isolated entity, but as a place engaged with the weighty issues of the day—social, political, educational.
How often does the magazine appear?
The magazine is published six times a year. It is mailed in the second month on the cover banner.
Who receives the magazine?
Duke seniors receive it gratis during their last year on campus and for two years after that; graduate and professional-school alumni receive it for one year after their graduations.

The magazine is mailed to nearly 100,000 alumni and university supporters. Parents of Duke students and other friends of the university can receive the magazine by paying the subscription fee. We welcome any and all subscribers; please let us know your Duke connection or how you became aware of the magazine if you'd like to subscribe.

How many staff members work on the magazine?
The editor of the magazine, Robert Bliwise, has overall responsibility for editorial direction and content; Managing Editor Zoë Ingalls oversees the magazine’s day-to-day operations, manages freelance and staff writers, and serves as art director. Senior Writer Bridget Booher is responsible for writing, assigning, and editing feature assignments for the magazine. Clay Felker Magazine Fellow Jacob Dagger ’03 helps with staff writing and editing. Senior Editorial Assistant Kate Bailey manages classified and display advertising, oversees class note production, and helps with editing. Most of the magazine's on-campus photography comes through the resources of the Office of University Photography. The magazine is designed by Maxine Mills Graphic Design of Carrboro, N.C., and printed by Progress Printing, Lynchburg, VA.
What's the magazine's reporting relationship within
the university structure?

The magazine is part of the Office of Alumni Affairs. The co-publishers are Sterly L. Wilder '83, executive director of Alumni Affairs, and Peter Vaughn, executive director of Alumni and Development Communications.
Do students have any role in the magazine?
Yes; Duke student interns process the information submitted for class notes. They also handle some reporting of campus events, perform research for stories, contribute to the "Quad Quotes" section, and occasionally write some of the smaller feature stories.
How do I get an item for the magazine's Class Notes
section published?

Write Class Notes Editor, Duke Magazine, Box 90572, Durham, N.C. 27708-0572; or fax (typed only, please) to (919) 684-6022; or e-mail to dukemag@duke.edu. The magazine is eager to publish news of individual alumni activities—professional accomplishments, such as job changes and promotions, or personal milestones, such as advanced degrees earned, marriages, and births. Because of the volume of material we receive and the long lead time required for typesetting, design, and printing, we ask that you be patient. Your submission may not appear for two to three issues. Online Class Notes can be accessed via the “Class Notes” link at the magazine’s home page http://www.dukemagazine.duke.edu/. The Online Class Notes section provides space for alumni to post news in their own words.
Where do I send a change of address?
Write Alumni Records, Box 90581, Durham, N.C. 27708. Please include your current mailing label. Or you may e-mail address changes to bluedevil@duke.edu.
Do you have past issues of the magazine?
In general, yes. Back issues are $5 a copy.
How do you select story ideas for the magazine?
Ideas come from a great variety of sources. Because the magazine is interested in addressing the issues of the day in the context of the campus, many ideas come from the general-interest and higher-education press. Others come from meetings with the Editorial Advisory Board (a group of Duke alumni and friends, chaired by New York Magazine founding editor Clay Felker '51, who are accomplished professional journalists); continuing interaction with university administrators, faculty members, and students; and the editors' general sense of the intellectual currents of the campus.
How do I submit a letter to the editor or a general query
about editorial policies?

You should write Editor Robert Bliwise at Duke Magazine, Box 90572, Durham, N.C. 27708-0572; (919) 684-2883 or (800) 367-3853. You can also send him an e-mail message at robert.bliwise@daa.duke.edu. Letters to the editor for publication should be no more than 300 words. We reserve the right to edit for length and clarity.
I have an idea that I think is publication-worthy. Should I submit a completed manuscript or query you with the idea?
You're much better off sending a detailed written query to Senior Writer Bridget Booher, at Duke Magazine, Durham, N.C. 27708-0572. The query should include a sample of comparable writing, preferably published. Our feature standard ranges from 2,000 to 3,000 words. We encourage ideas for profiles, for issue-oriented stories that draw on campus expertise, or for other pieces that conform to the magazine's editorial mission.
Does the magazine pay for pieces it publishes?
Yes, but as a nonprofit publication, our rates are well below those offered by commercial magazines—typically in the range of several hundred dollars to a thousand, depending on the complexity of the subject being researched and the length anticipated for publication. Over the years, several contributors have developed a continuing relationship with the magazine and, by extension, with other Duke publications that rely on freelance talent.
Does the magazine accept advertising?
Yes, the magazine carries both classified advertising and display advertising. Space reservations are due ten weeks prior to publication. Camera-ready art (on disk or attached to e-mail—QuarkXpress preferred) is due two weeks thereafter. Frequency advertisers receive a discounted rate. For information on advertising rates, deadlines, circulation, and mechanical requirements, see our advertising information page, or contact Duke Magazine, c/o Advertising Manager, Box 90572, Durham, NC 27708-0572; (919) 684-2875; Fax: (919) 681-1659; e-mail: dukemag@duke.edu
