In Brief
- Silvia Ferrari, assistant professor of
mechanical engineering; Jonathan Mattingly, associate professor
of mathematics; and Tannishtha Reya, assistant professor of pharmacology
and cancer biology, were among fifty-six researchers who received
a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers
at a ceremony at the White House in July. The awards recognize "the
most promising researchers in the nation within their fields."
- Aaron Greenwald, program director for this year's North
Carolina Festival of the Book at Duke, has been appointed interim
director of Duke Performances following the retirement of Kathy
Silbiger. Greenwald's appointment takes effect January 1, 2007,
and runs through June 30, 2008. Greenwald will oversee Duke Performances
during a period in which the university's new strategic plan
calls for increasing investment in the arts.
- Calvin Howell, director of undergraduate studies in physics,
is the new director of the Duke-based Triangle Universities Nuclear
Laboratory, which serves nuclear physicists from Duke, UNC-Chapel
Hill, and N.C. State University.
- Janie Long M.R.E. '81, former director of the Marriage and
Family Therapy Program at Antioch New England Graduate School,
is the new director of the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
and Transgender Life at Duke. She succeeds Karen Krahulik, now
an associate dean at Brown University.
- Cindy L. Van Dover, formerly an associate professor of marine
biology at the College of William & Mary, is the new director
of the Duke Marine Laboratory.
